Geolocation FAQs

First, make sure you have location services turned on and allow OLG.ca to use your location. This is the easiest way for your location to be accurately identified and allows more internet connections to be successful.

If location services are not an option for you, IP geolocation is being used which comes with some restrictions.

Many Ontarians rely on satellite or microwave Internet connections or connect to the internet through a mobile hub. These connections cannot be accurately validated as being within Ontario and so OLG does not accept them.

Some others rely on Internet connections provided by Internet Service Providers (ISP) that distribute their Internet Protocol (IP) addresses from Quebec. Unfortunately, in these cases, all verification attempts indicate that the IP is based in Quebec.

Check your connection type with your ISP. If you receive an error message and you have a connection that isn’t mobile, microwave, satellite or being dynamically provided by a Quebec based internet service provider, you can contact OLG Player Support and provide the following information:

  • Your current physical location (e.g. address where you are attempting to access OLG.ca)

  • Your Internet service provider

  • Your IP address

  • Your device make and model

An easy way to locate an IP address is to Google ‘What’s my IP address?’

Player Support will respond with the investigation results as soon as possible.

OLG is required to comply with regulations related to gaming in Ontario including the Registrar’s Standards for Gaming, developed and regulated by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO). Included in the Standards is the requirement to confirm that our players are located in Ontario at the time of gaming. This is separate from confirming the residency or identity of our players.

OLG uses a combination of location services and IP geolocation to determine if you are in Ontario. Location services refers to using your device’s location through, for example, GPS. This is similar to when a website asks to use your location. This is the main technology used however, sometimes location services may not be available or a Player’s device does not have the option available. In this case, IP geolocation technology is used. The technology uses the Internet Protocol (IP) address of your device's Internet connection to determine your location.

Yes, you can, but you must enable location services. You will not be successful using the IP geolocation method.

All internet connections are supported if the device’s location services are enabled. Location services uses the device’s location and does not require specific internet connection types.

If your device cannot allow location services to be used, OLG supports devices connected via Wi-Fi through a Fixed land-based Internet connection located in Ontario.
